Even when you order a flight, you’re often left sipping whatever you ordered and pretending as if you know what is hell going on here. How to choose wines?

Wine is always a good idea. Whether you’re going for a birthday party, celebrate your 30th anniversary or just let your hair down with friends after work, a bottle of a good wine will make a perfect match for you. However, the choice of a beverage might differ depending on your goal. The wine you pick for personal use is different from the one you buy for a celebration. There are also the cases when wine is not appropriate (okay, we are just kidding).

To ensure you get awesome beverage experience, our experts provide you with simple tips to choose your drinks wisely:

Consider the occasion.

Sofia Carta, Head Sommelier at Forte Village Resort and the Member of the Italian Sommelier Association, says the first step is to ask why you are looking for a bottle of wine “Is it for a special occasion? An anniversary? Is it for pleasure or just a present? After that you can choose the grape, and the terroir; and the winery and don’t miss in checking the vintage. Don’t forget that easy simple wines are better to buy and drink when young.”

The choice of wine for your family is usually a piece of cake. You know what you and your relatives enjoy, so you just pick the bottle of your favorite drink unless you want to surprise your dearest and nearest with an extraordinary blend of flavors.

But if you are looking for the one to satisfy the crowd, selecting the right bottle might get a bit complicated. Since wine preferences are subjective in most cases, our sommelier recommends choosing drinks that fall closer to the middle of acidity and sweetness. Alternatively, you can pick up a bottle of white and red wine to satisfy the majority of palates.

Read the label.

No, we do not want you to choose the bottle with the nice font, catchy illustrations and a “smart” name on it. It is a good advice to read descriptions on the back of a bottle as it contains all the necessary information for you to choose a good wine, such as the sweetness, acidity, the alcohol percentage, the region where the grapes were harvested, etc. Furthermore, it will provide you with the knowledge of flavors you’re going to experience while drinking the wine. If you like the description, the high chance you’ll enjoy the drink.

Set off on a tasting tour.

If you just begin your gastro journey in the world of unique blends and flavors and have no idea what you like or dislike, visit one of the tasting rooms that are usually set up with the majority of wineries. A knowledgeable sommelier will conduct a guided tour for you, outline the main varieties, and tell how they differ. Furthermore, you’ll have a chance to order a flight, try several types of wine, and choose the one to your taste.

Old is not always good.

There is a common misconception that old wines taste better. The quality of wine depends on a wide range of factors that include smell, structure, balance, depth, etc. Most wines are not meant to be aged since they should be consumed within five years from the moment they are bottled. To age properly, the wine should have a certain level of acidity and sugar. Red wines are more appropriate for aging due to their structure. So, if you are in two minds which bottle of a red wine to pick, we recommend opting for an older one.

Stick to your preferences.

A one more useful recommendation from our sommelier is to stick to your choice and remember the drinks you adore the most. Each time you want to say “wow” or “mm” when you make the sip, take a picture of the bottle and remember the type of wine. This approach might help you to understand what to look for in a supermarket and what types to steer clear.

High price does not equal good quality.

Most buyers don’t consider items on sale to be a good choice. Okay, in most cases those are low-quality types of wine, which don’t have a sufficient popularity among buyers. Sofia Carta believes that price is important, but higher price does not always equal better quality. Sometimes beverages on sale were sitting in warehouses for a while or it is just not the season for them. But these reasons do not mean that the wine is of poor quality. So, figure out why the item is on sale before choosing your drinks.
